Interview with Kazushi Sakuraba

Kazushi Sakuraba: A long time ago, I had been drinking and I decided to joke around and ride a kid's size bike home. The police stopped me and said "Hey you! You stole that, didn't you" and they took me to the police station. My opponent (Mirko Cro Cop) is a police officer so I want to win this fight and prove my innocence! (laughing)

PRIDE Fighting Championships: Do you feel any pressure about this fight? And, please tell us if you've come up with any new techniques for the fight.

Sakuraba: The fights still a long way off, so I don't really feel any pressure. I don't have any new techniques but I think it would be great if I could take him out with a right high-kick. The rules haven't been finalized yet but, if possible, I'd like to fight with no strikes allowed! (laughing)

PRIDE: Mr. Mori****a, we've heard rumors of Hidehiko Yoshida's participation in Shock Wave. What's the current situation?

Naoto Mori****a (President of Dream Stage Entertainment): There's been some talk of this in the news lately. DSE has approached Yoshida about appearing in Shock Wave and PRIDE. We told him that we would like him to fight if possible. If we get a favorable response from Yoshida's side, we'll probably get him to fight in Shock Wave and PRIDE. The truth is though, we are currently still in negotiations with Yoshida. There's nothing more than that to tell.

PRIDE: We've also heard Royce Gracie's name thrown around.

Mori****a: DSE is also negotiating with Royce. Of course, we'd like him to fight in both Shock Wave and PRIDE. As far as Royce and Yoshida fighting, neither side has signed a contract so there's nothing to be said about that either.

PRIDE: Sakuraba, are you going to have a special costume for Shock Wave?

Sakuraba: I haven't thought about it at all. (laughing)

PRIDE: There's quite a large weight-difference between you and Mirko.

Sakuraba: Weight?…really?

PRIDE: I think it's more than 10 kilos.

Sakuraba: Well then, I quit! (laughing)

PRIDE: What strikes of Mirko's are you most concerned about?

Sakuraba: I'm concerned about all of his strikes because he is a striker, not just any one strike in particular.

PRIDE: Have you been doing any particular training in preparation for that?

Sakuraba: Not especially. Not now.

PRIDE: What impression did you get of the Cro Cop/Silva fight in PRIDE 29?

Sakuraba: It was fun to watch.

PRIDE: What did you learn from it?

Sakuraba: Nothing in particular. I only saw it once.

PRIDE: Are you having any pain in your shoulder?

Sakuraba: It's a lot better now. It's not 100% but I can get it into shape in time for the fight.

PRIDE: Isn't it even easier to damage again now?

Sakuraba: Well, I did get hurt the first time… I don't think there's anything that I can do about it except be careful.

PRIDE: What about your stamina?

Sakuraba: It's pretty much back to normal.

PRIDE: What about the strength of the tendons in your shoulder?

Sakuraba: I had surgery so it's not perfect. It's fine for movement, though. There have been times when I couldn't lift heavy barbells.

PRIDE: Honestly, how do you plan on winning?

Sakuraba: I think it will come down to me knocking him down with a high-kick or me getting knocked down by a high-kick. (smiling)

The 2 powerhouses of the MMA world, PRIDE and K-1, have combined their efforts to bring you the biggest MMA event ever, entitled "Shock Wave." Shock Wave will be held on August 28th, 2002 (Rain delay=29th or 30th) in the National Stadium of Japan. This will be the first time that any privately owned company has ever held an event at the National Stadium. The Stadium seats 100,000 people, making it the largest martial arts event ever. According to Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, President of K-1, the concept of this event is to have a different style of competition. "I believe this different style of competition may be the basis for all fighting. You open the door to your own fate. It's certainly the base for the fighters. I want the fighters to take this opportunity to fight in this new style of competition at the National Stadium and open the door to their own fates. That's why we came up with the idea of a new style of competition."
This competition will not be like last years INOKI BOM-BA-YE 2001, where all the fights were conducted under MMA rules. To put forward the concept of a new style of competition, the rules for each fight will be determined separately, depending on the match-up. Regarding the rules for the main event, Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Mirko Cro Cop, Master Ishii also said, "Basically, the current plan is for them to fight under MMA rules as in PRIDE." With a crowd of 100,000 under the summer sky, Shock Wave will prove to be the biggest martial arts event every held and a must see!
