Shihan Royama (7th dan) was born in 1948. Already in his childhood he had a great desire to train Martial Arts. At the age of 16, when in high school, Shihan Royama started to train karate at Sosai Mas Oyama's original "Oyama Dojo" where he was taught by many instructors and first of all by the Founder of Kyokushin. He got his black belt at the age of 19. Royama trained exceptionally hard and soon became an instructor for the headquarters in Tokyo in his mid-teens.
Then Royama temporarily left Kyokushin and appeared on the ring as a kick-boxer. In 1973 he came back to Kyokushinkaikan and participated in the 5th All Japan Championship. In the final fight he met Yamazaki and won. On the 6th All Japan Championship he became the 3rd. After that Royama placed second in the First World Open Karate Tournament in 1975 by defeating many strong opponents with his famous "gedan mawashigeri" or low-kicks. In that tournament, he succeeded in introducing this devastating technique to the world and making it the single most effective technique in knock-down karate championships today. On the 2nd World Tournament in 1978 Royama was the Captain of the Japanese team. Unfortunately he broke three ribs in the third round and was not allowed by the doctor to continue the fight.
Shihan Hatsuo Royama's pursuit to perfect his karate skill has led him to explore martial arts as practised around Asia. Through these combined methods, he has developed a unique style of practice from which Kyokushin practitioners may utilize to further their own study.
After the death of Sosai Oyama, Shihan supported Kancho Matsui and remained to be Branch Chief of his native Saitama prefecture. He became an Executive Advisor of the IKO Kyokushinkaikan and a curator of Japan and Russian region in IKO International Committee.
