The Work
Fitness instructors work with groups and individuals in gyms, health and fitness centres and leisure centres.
As a fitness instructor you would:
• supervise customers and make sure that they are exercising safely and effectively
• conduct group exercise classes such as circuit training, aerobics or spinning
• carry out inductions and consultations with new members
• design personal programmes.
If you have an advanced qualification you could work with specialist groups of people, such as older adults, children with disabilities or clients referred by doctors.
In smaller clubs you may also carry out routine duties, such as reception, health and safety checks and pool operations.
Hours and Environment
As a full-time fitness instructor you would usually work 38 to 40 hours a week, often on a shift and rota basis to cover early mornings, evenings and weekends. Many people work part-time or on a freelance basis.
You would work indoors in gyms, health clubs or leisure centres. If you are self-employed you may also take classes in school halls or community centres, so would need to do some local travel.
Skills and Interests
You would need:
• good communication skills
• an outgoing and approachable personality
• diplomacy and tact
• the ability to motivate and enthuse people from a wide range of backgrounds
• a responsible attitude to health and safety
• knowledge of nutrition and healthy diet.
Entry
To work as a qualified fitness instructor and obtain public liability insurance you must:
• be aged 18 or over
• have nationally recognised qualifications at level 2
You can do courses through a number of colleges and private training providers, but you should check that these lead to a recognised qualification. Doing a course which enables you to gain entry on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), which is also known as the 'Exercise Register' will improve your chances of employment.
REPs has been set up to help safeguard the health and interests of people who are using the services of exercise and fitness instructors, teachers and trainers. The Register recognises industry-based qualifications and practical competency, and requires fitness professionals to work within a Code of Practice.
You would be eligible for level 2 entry to the REPS with any of the following qualifications:
• Central YMCA Qualifications (CYQ) Certificate in Fitness Instructing (gym, exercise to music and aqua)
• OCR Certificate in Teaching Exercise and Fitness (exercise to music, gym, and aqua)
• Active IQ Certificate in Gym Instructing.
Visit the REPs website (in Further Information) for details of approved training providers.
Level 2 entry is also possible with one of the following:
• a Teachers Certificate from the Keep Fit Association
• PTI Class 3 Certificate from the military.
You would also need to have a first aid certificate, which includes the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate. You might need lifeguard qualifications for some jobs.
As an alternative you could start as an assistant instructor. You would not need a qualification for this, as you would be supervised by a qualified instructor. As an assistant fitness instructor you may be able to work towards NVQ Level 2 in Instructing Exercise and Fitness, which is awarded by OCR, City and Guilds, CYQ and SQA. This would give you entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 2.
You may be able to get into this job through an Apprenticeship scheme. The range of Apprenticeships available in your area will depend on the local jobs market and the types of skills employers need from their workers. To find out more, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk.
Training
Once you have a Level 2 qualification you can take any of the following qualifications to gain a Level 3 Advanced Instructor qualification:
• NVQ Level 3 in Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise (in both gym and exercise to music contexts)
• NCFE Certificate in Teaching Fitness Through Movement
• CYQ Certificate in Advanced Fitness Instructing (Gym and Exercise to Music)
• CYP Certificate in Personal Training
• CYQ Level 3 Certificate in GP Referrals
• Active IQ Certificate in Personal Training.
Level 3 entry to REPs is also possible if you have one of the following:
• Teachers Certificate from the Keep Fit Association, Fitness League or Medau Society
• PTI Class 1 or 2 Certificate from the military.
Visit the REPs website (in Further Information) for more details.
The new Level 4 Specialist Exercise Instructor qualification should be available from the end of 2007. This will include units on designing and adapting physical activity programmes for the following groups:
• adults with obesity and diabetes melitus
• older adults with a history of falls
• adults with mental health problems
• adults recovering from a stroke
• adults needing accelerated rehabilitation exercises
• adults with heart disease
• adults with low back pain.
You would need to be qualified and experienced as an advanced instructor before beginning the level 4 qualification. See the REPs website for details.
Throughout your career you should keep up to date with new trends and developments in exercise techniques and fitness as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Opportunities
There are gyms and fitness centres all over the UK, in both urban and rural areas. There has been a big increase in leisure facilities in recent years, leading to an increased demand for instructors, but there is still a lot of competition for jobs.
With experience and higher qualifications, you may be able to progress to senior instructor, then to a management position. Other options could be to move into training other instructors or coaching a sport. You could also start your own fitness club.
You could have the opportunity to work abroad, for example for an international hotel chain, or a tour operator offering fitness activities for holidaymakers.
Annual Income
• Starting salaries for fitness instructors can be around £10,000
• This can rise to from around £14,000 to over £20,000
Freelance instructors can earn £10 to £20 an hour.
