The University of California at Davis has been waging an anti-chitosan war for the past few years. Chitosan, if you'll remember, is being sold as a "fat grabber." You take it before you eat and it's supposed to "absorb" all that bad ol' fat and lead to weight loss.
This year, the researchers gave people five times the recommended dose of chitosan in order to see whether the dietary supplement would keep them from absorbing some of the dietary fat being provided in the meals. In order to determine if a product alters fat metabolism, fecal fat has to be weighed (someone at UC Davis is very dedicated).
The results found that the product (Absorbitol made by Natrol), when taken at five times the daily dose, "traps" less than one calorie of fat. Folks, chitosan is only good for making you lose weight in your wallet! Case closed!
