Other info: Two metres tall, 145 kg of muscle, and strong as an ox. He also has blond hair and blue eyes - about as close to the image of a Viking as you can get. This 29 year-old Swedish Viking comes from the heartland of Sweden and his mother can beat most men at arm-wrestling. His father is a bit more like the rest of us ordinary mortals, while his younger brother is almost as big and strong as he is. While Magnus was in Morocco winning ”The World’s Strongest Man” competition, little brother Torbjörn was busy winning the title of Sweden’s strongest man.

Apart from the fact that he was born with the right genes, the story of the ”Giant Swede” started in the mid-1980s. Two brothers, watching television at home, were impressed by Jón Páll Sigmarsson, who at that time held the title ”The World’s Strongest Man”. It was also at this time that Arnold Schwarzenegger was at the peak of his muscleman career. Inspired, Magnus went into town and bought himself a bar-bell and an Arnold Schwarzenegger training guide. Magnus was already bench-pressing 100 kg when he was sixteen. There was a lot of weight-lifting in the cellar that doubled as his gym six days per week; this was after school or after putting in a full day’s work on the big family farm. ”I was brought up to believe in doing the right thing. I have never trained during the day-time, it’s always been between 7 o’clock and 10 o’clock in the evening. It’s only in the last two years that I’ve started spending more time on my training,” says Magnus in his lilting Swedish accent. Magnus had no particular goals for all this training from the start, he just wanted to be really strong. ”I am used to working hard and doing things properly, so I don’t go to the gym to stand around showing off,” he says. ”Of course I dreamed of being in strong-man competitions, but I never thought these dreams would come true.”
