First of all, I just want to say that their were more women than I had ever seen to compete in this year's Pan Ams. I would hazard a guess at about 40 women all together. It was unbelievable! IN my division alone, we had 22 competitors.
There was only a few shady moments of judging, rules and reffing that I noticed. No worse than any other tournament I have attended. The tournament was good, lots of top names like Cumprido, Ricardinho, Leka, Neto, Terere (sp?) and others. It was a good turn out and most went home satisfied except for the people who lost seemed to have some complaints about the way it was run and reffed and stuff.
As for Leka's match with Gazzy, it was incredible. Leka won by two advantages over Gazzy who had jumped guard and kept Leka there the entire time. I know there is some friction between the two women, but I am not sure of it's entire origin. I believe they used to train together and Leka was upset that Gazzy no longer trains with her. Standard stuff really. Gazzy came up to me at the tournament as we were getting ready to fight to introduce herself. She is refreshingly down to earth and aproachable not to mention a gorgeous purple belt bad a$$ as well. We got a chance to talk a lot about this sport that day and shared some interesting ideas.
I met Siggy, who was very cool. A statuesque Nordic blond purple belt. She seems very sweet as well as a force to be reckoned with on the mats. She came in second place.
I closed out my division with Kyra. We trained for this tournament for the month before and agreed to share the gold, that's exactly what happened. She was promoted to purple belt right on the podium, what an awesome suprise for her!
I had three really tough matches, one against Renata from Ralph's school and a match against the girl who beat me last year, Yuko from Axis Japan. There was one other woman between the two and for the life of me I cannot remember her name. I believe she was Asian, though.
There were a lot of tough women from Colorado at Amal's school. Olga won the heavyweight division. Bernadette came in second place in the same division.
I thought it was just so nice to see so many women out there on the mats, taking this sport seriously. I am really impressed.
I will have my photos up very soon on my site.
Cheers, guys!
