One of the very few talented boys on this planet; Carter Williams. Carter is in excellent company with fighters like Alexey Ignashov, Remy Bonjaski and Sergei Gur. MAN-magazine was curious about this young American fighter who is klimbing the ladder of fortune so fast! A decent young man that choose kickboxing as his profession.
Carter, relax, sit back and answer our questions... ;
Nobody expected you to win the K-1USA 2002 and if people would have put some money on you they would have become rich. Can you tell us about the adrenaline that was running thru your vanes and what it did with you that night?
> Yes that night if you believed in me you would have been "RICH"! unfortunately most didn’t....OH WELL! but those who did like my close friends and such were quite happy and made quite a bit of money if they bet when the odds were up at 18 to 1, they made "BANK"! at fight time they went down to I think 8 to 1 still pretty good. I had heard quite a few high rollers laid down some pretty serious cash and the odds changed.
I'm really curious what they'll be this year?
Yeah, the juice was flowing for sure but we were prepared for every step that’s just the way my coach does things, very detailed preparation. He told me nothing could stop me if I believed in myself and that’s what I did. He said if I believed that what he taught me would make me world champion, it would.
That night I was "KING OF THE WORLD" and knew that this was my future, to be king of K-1.
Where do you come from?
> I come from San Jose, by the time I was 14 I moved to Modesto, Calif. where Mr. Fields who became my coach discovered me.
How long do you practice Martial Arts?
> I studyed for about 5 yrs the Kang Duk Won style Tae Kwon Do my coach Mr. Fields taught me which is a combat system, I have my Black Belt .
Besides kickboxing you also fought on MMA rules, what do you prefer?
> MMA either way is cool, fight is a fight but I have to admit I love stand up. The training takes a different approach so there’s some adapting here and there.
What is your goal in the near future?
> I want to be the future of K-1, the first US Champion to show the world we can still hang with the best.
Can you tell us something about Team Voodoo? Where does the name Voodoo comes from?
> TEAMVOODOOUSA name was developed by my coach Mr.Gene Fields, the story as I understand is that his grand-daughter is Haďatian and her Great Grand mother was a voodoo priestess ,very powerful from Haďti. So he came up with the scary name "TEAMVOODOO".
Do you think that you are an example for the black youth in the States? Are you a role model?
> Yes I hope I can become a role model in the future, I don't think too many look up to me now because truly I haven't made my mark yet.
Your still young (next month you'll become 24), how do you handle your popularity?
> Popularity where ? not in the states like in Japan its cool but I still have to prove my self to them.
What are your hobbies besides the Martial Arts?
> My hobbies are; dogs, fishing, swimming, kids and outdoor stuff
Are you engaged, do you have a girlfriend?
> I have a girlfriend we have 2 kids , my personel life is personel.
What is your family thinking of your professional fighting career?
> Besides my girl Ray and 2 kids JR. and Jacinda, my family is very supportive of my career.
Who would you like to fight in the K-1 circus? Name your top 5!
> I want Ignashov, Hoost, Bonjaski, Le Banner and Sapp and anyone else who's willing to get in may way!
I say that you will be one of the potential winners of the K-1 overall title within three years, what’s you answer?
> For you to say I will be overall winner in 3 years is close, but I'll do it this year, this is the year of the monkey my year!
It’s time for young talents like Ignashov, Bonjaski and Carter Williams, what is the first thing that comes to your mind?
> When you say..."It's time for young talents like... I say it's about time! Our time, new blood time.
If you would win the title and this 500K, what would you do with the money?
> If or I should say when I win the GP what we have planned is investing in the future, which is what we've been doing for a while but we would be able to do it on a larger scale. Maybe buy a house.
Did your live changed much when you became a professional fighter?
> My life changed when I became professional of course, now I had a solid course to follow and someone I knew would be behind me no matter what and that’s my coach Gene and Cat Fields or I should say "MOM and DAD". They took me in when I was 14 yrs and my life changed forever.
Why is it that there aren’t real heavyweight champions like yourself in the US?
> I believe there are plenty of good heavyweights in the US just the exposure is different there than in Europe and the exceptions of KICKBOXING as opposed to boxing.
Tell us why Gene fields makes the ‘difference’?
> Mr. and Mrs. Fields make all the difference in the world to me. If it wasn’t for Mr. Fields finding me and showing me the light so to say life would have been very different for me and I would be lucky to be alive. He taught me the way the ring works, body-mechanics, diet and his vast knowledge of a lot of fighting arts (mainly Muay Thai) They back me no matter what and let me follow my path. To put in another way "I walk through the shadows of the valley of death, yet fear no-man because my coaches are beside me"! I trust them, there family and there the only ones I trust.
