January 2004 we were present at the excellent oganized K-1 event of Marseille. Mr.Wüstenberg and his son did everything to make this a event never to forget because of the superb matchmaking, but he did something else as well; he invited French K-1 fighter Cyril Abidi. For MAN-magazine the right chance to interview this TOPfighter who is loved and hated by the K-1 fans all over the world. Loved for his braveness, hated for his fauls, but one thing is for sure; his fights are never boring!!! We asked Cyril to sit down, relax and answer our questions for the readers of MAN-magazine; he did...
What is your goal for 2004?
>> To make good fights with interesting challenges and to be again at the Tokyo dome for the final.
Do you have hobbies beside your fighting career?
>> Sure thing! I just love to ride my motor and also I'm very fond of diving but above all my children.
Why don't we never see you in Europe in the ring?
>> I was present at the tournament in Paris Bercy last year! Unfortunately I lost the final versus Alexey Ignashov. Actully, I fight every year in Marseille...
How come we never see new talent from France?
>> I'm sure there are new talents, espescially in light and middle weight divisions. But you have to understand one thing; French federations do have their own rules and this has to do with the French government, therefor they often go to fight in Thailand. This is mainly why we don't hear from French fighters I think.
Are you training young talents like Jerome LEBANNER does?
>> Le Banner has his team, but I don't think that he trains them himself. Sometime I give lessons or train with fighters who are interrested and it's pure fun to do!
Do you think that you might start on MMA as well? ...are you already training?
>> I fought already one time on MMA rules versus DON FRYE and lost. I was not well prepred for this fight so I like to forget it fast... My contract with K-1 corp. says that I have to appear in at minimum one MMA fight per year. I'm training wrestling and groundtechniques to keep up with the guys who are used to fight on the ground.
What is your oppinion about K-1 organizing MMA fights as well?
>> No comment... I'm a stand-up fighter.
Compare to the K-1 rules, isn't it time for the french government or kick boxing organisation to allow knees?
>> Fighting with knees are allowed in France, but under auspicien of Thai Boxing federation. But I assume that you are asking this because of the different regulation when we have K-1 fights in France... French thai boxing federation, doesn't want to sanction K-1 fights.
Do you think that kick boxing changed over the last 5 years, tactics ect...?
>> It depends about the weight divisions fights - Heavy weights were always staying on powerfull tactics. Now with my trainer, Didier LE BORGNE, I'm working like an 'semi' heavy weight. It's very interresting to get intelligent tactics...and a big smile appears on his face!
What is your favorite technique?
>> Low kicks!!! 100% low kicks.
Do you always train with the same sparring partners or do you also train with other top fighters in the scene?
>> It depends about the fights and oponents, I train with Cyrille DIABATE, Stephane REVEILLON, Aziz KHATTOU and Christian N'KA.
What is the last game you bought for your playstation?
>> GTA 3, Cool!!!
How do you relax beetween fights in a tournament?
>> It depends if I'm injured or not - with Didier, my new trainer, it's more easy, he has good experience of fights - but it's always a stressfull moment.
France is famous for it's cuisine, what is your favorite dish?
>> Hahahahaha... Pasta and lasagne.
Sportscar or motorcycle?
>> GSXR YABUSA 1300
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
>> Nothing special, I have a good life as a athlete, I'm lucky to travel all over the world and meet new people. So I go on and train, day after day; i like to become the best, the VERY best!
Some questions of our readers:
Andries NAWIL - The Netherlands
Would you like a rematch with RAMPAGE?
>> BOH... YES
Dana MOORE - UK
Compare to the success in the beguinning of your K-1 career, how hard has it been for you over the last two years?
>> I had some problems with my staff. My team was a team of friends but without experience, now I have a contract with K-1 corp. and a professionnal trainner.
François THIERRY - France
What do you think of k-1 making you fight those "freaks" and ex-boxers?
>> I'ts commercial! Don't think about sport, think about busness. I don't like it, but it's my busness, it's my job to accept this kind of fights.
Thierry FREIRE -Portugal
Who is your favorite opponent?
>> I like to fight good and sport opponents, like AERTS or BONJASKY, they are clear, technical... and sportly
Paul BROOKS - USA
In the press you can always read that you used to be a real streetfighter, can you please explain how you became a topfighter in K-1?
>> As a streetfighter I kept determination and mental, I forgot all rest to get more technical, tactics by good trainning... I'm now a sportman!
Hans Meier - Germany
What was your most difficult opponent?
>> Peter AERTS and RAY SEFO
Heather MULLANY - Ireland
Can you describe the feeling when you are in the middle of the ring in the tokyo dome with all these people?
>> To describe, geesh... there are hardly words for it... To be in the ring, it's already something special in life, only fighters can understand I think. In theTokyo dome, with all these fans, I feel undestructible. When the fight begins, I hear only my coach... concentration is very important!
