From the last K-1 Bercy on Jerome Le Banner really wanted to meet Abidi in the ring. Winner by KO, Geronimo, is tired and wants to slow down from a crazy rhythm he has been in over the last months. He will probably not fight in Bercy on July the second.
Jerome, tell us about the recent victory over Cyril Abidi in the super fight at the European GP .
I was technically dominating the fight during the first 3 rounds. The 4th was pretty equal and I beat him in the fifth. Why did I wait till the fifth? I wanted to extent the pleasure I had. I call Abidi Mr Spock: he is a bit like someone from Mars. He takes shots in the head and he is very flexible around his pelvis. Right now I focus on September because Abidi is not really top 10.
There was some tension between you and Abidi since last year.
It’s a dispute that mainly occurred in the press. I provoked him a bit like they do in the USA. We also had a disagreement in Japan when we had the same trainer. After that, tension raised between the two of us in Marseille.
To a point where you almost fought eachother?
We had some words in Marseille, it could have ended in a fight between us, but I didn’t want to fight him outside the ring. Last year, after his loss in the final against Ignashov, I went to Ignashov to ask him how he was doing and if he was tired since he had a fight just two weeks prior to that. Abidi interpreted it bad. When the Japanese proposed the fight, I immediately said yes.
How do you feel after your visit to hospital?
Very good. The repeated head butts from Abidi made that I had a swelling like an egg from an ostrich after the fight. It was impressive at that moment but I went straight to hospital and it’s all history now. We don’t practise dancing.

Did the atmosphere in the Palais Omnisports Bercy fill in your expectations?
I did not appreciate that people whistled Abidi. He entered on his music and, with the exception of 15 to 20 guys, the whole audience was whistling. It was not very sportive and I don’t agree with that. Good for him that it was a reason to perform better. It gave him the extra energy to make it that far in the fight. It’s good for him and in that way he will be able to fight back.
What are your plans for the future?
Normally I had to fight Schilt on July 2 in Bercy in a super fight. Schilt his fightstyle is not really nice to watch. But I’m very tired. Honestly I’m dead tired. It was too much. People see my fight in France, but in japan I haven’t stopped. I fought Sapp, Amada, I did mma … After that I fought in Geneva and then in Bercy vs Abidi.
You will not accept the invitation for July 2?
I will be there, but outside the ring. I’m waiting for what they offer to me. I repeat, I’m tired. I’ve fought during a month in Japan. The two finals in September and November are important to me. Besides I will certainly fight Semmy Schilt in September.
What are you doing outside the ring with your acting career?
The making of the movie is in stand-by ( Jerome is one of the actors in the movie ‘Kumite’ from Jean-Clause Van Damme ). Obviously it is delayed until the spring. I only act when I’m not fighting. Fighting is my thing, the rest we can do later …
