Originally the belt system is thought to have consisted of only a black belt for experts and a white belt for non-experts. From there, it is thought to have evolved to include a brown colored belt between the two. Finally, the earliest known system of belt colors is supposed to have been institutionalized based upon the colors of the seasons. White is the equivalent of Spring and birth. The Japanese year begins on March 21, the first day of spring. Green is the equivalent of Summer, Brown is the color of Autumn, and Black is the color of Winter and death. Were these colors really selected for this reason? It's possible, but there is no documentation to say one way or another.

Some people argue that the belt colors in the old belt system are symbolic of the type of training done. White belts have no experience, so their belts are clean. Green is the color of grass stains, brown is the color of dirt, and black is the color that dirt, grass, and blood stains turn on cloth when the clothing is never washed. There are a couple of problems with this particular myth. One of the most obvious problems is that Japanese don't grow grass or have yards as we think of them in the West. They don't have the space. Usually any Japanese yard is used as a rice paddy. The other significant flaw in this silly myth is that Japanese do wash their belts. It seems to be a Western misconception that you should never wash your belt.
