Warner and LEE recently reported a case in the American Journal or Ophtymalogy that "use of dietery supplement containing ephedra alkaloids..contributed to the onset of.optic neuropathy."It seems that 30-year-old man who had a "10 year history of tabacco use[one pack a day] and drinking 18-24 cans of beer per day" experienced vision loss.Medical examination revealed that this patient had Leber hereditary optic neuropathy. The authors indicated that at the time of the vision loss, the patient reported that he had recently started taking a dietary supplement containing ephedra and
caffeine.Medical evaluation confirmed he had
mitochondrial damage associated with Leber hereditary optic neropathy and vision loss.Based on this, the authors proposed:
"...that the patient's use of dietery supplement contained ephedra alkaloids played an additive role to his tabacco and ancohol use in causing stress to the already abnormal mitochondrial function, and thereby contribiuted to the onset of his optic neuropathy. We recommanded that patients ans families with known Leber hereditary optic neuropathy should be asked about the use of over-the-counter drugs an supplements, and it may be prudent to advise patients against using such dietery supplements."
Hmmm-a patient who was a chronic smoker, who drank 18-24 cans of beer per day for 10 years, and hereditary eye condition that is known to cause mitochondrial damage, lost his vision.Based on this, the physician concluded that the vision loss must have been due taking the nutritional supplement containing ephedra! What a joke! I'm sure that drinking 18-24 beers per day for 10 years had no influence at all on this patient's vision or disease progression.THIS GUY IS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE"
