The UFC appears to be planning to return to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for UFC 56, which the company is attempting to schedule for November 19, just over a month after the company’s next scheduled event on the east coast.
UFC 55 is set to go off at the Mohegan Sun on October 7, which would give the company just 43 days between major pay per view broadcasts. Once you factor in a live event for the finale of the second season of the “Ultimate Fighter," reality show, propsed for Nov. 5, it looks to be a busy couple of months for Zuffa, the UFC’s parent company.
According to published reports, the UFC is petitioning the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the November date and venue, though the decision won’t be finalized until later this month.
Speculation had been that a third fight between Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell for the light heavyweight title could main event UFC 56, but with such a short time between the TUF finale and the November event, the UFC might now choose to have coaches Matt Hughes and Rich Franklin headline the event in a pair of matches.
Hughes’ next opponent has been rumored to be Karo Parisyan, but Franklin is without a number one contender for his middleweight belt since the UFC released Matt Lindland last week.
It is conceivable that the UFC will hold Couture-Liddell III until a possible January event, at which time former Pride star Quinton Jackson should also be eligible to sign a contract with the company.
