PRIDE FC2000 Opening 2000.1.30 TOKYO DOME

Strongest tournament in the world! Royce, in first appearance, defeats Takada.
The world's strongest tournament "PRIDE GP2000" finally came to pass. Besides the current PRIDE fighters, Royce Gracie, first participant and the heir of the Gracie family, Fujita, the heir of "Inoki-ism", former K-1 contender Satake and former sumo wrestler Tachihikari appeared. Sixteen exclusive fighters were selected from various fields and an initial qualifier was held. Fujita won over Nijman, former Rings, and showed his power. As for Sakuraba vs. Mezger, Mezger forfeited the match and Sakuraba proceeded. Takada fought Royce. He vowed revenge after the defeat over Ricson, but again he lost by judges' decision after displaying splendid technique using singlets. Goodridge, Shoji, Coleman, Vovchanchyn and Kerr, who are regular contenders in PRIDE, won the right to go on to a second qualifier.

Sakuraba assumes overwhelming victory over Royler! Japan defeats Gracies after 48 years!
This event had been heralded as a "best show in memory" thanks to Vovchanchyn's quick victory, first-time participation by Tom Erikson and Ricard Morais, etc. But it was Sakuraba who ultimately stole the show. The Gracie family, undefeated not only in PRIDE rings but everywhere in Japan, showed up to fight the two strongest pro-wrestlers. Alexsander Otsuka fought well but lost by judges' decision over the heir to the strongest lineage. In the bout between Royler (Ricson's brother) and Sakuraba, the latter, who is known in Japan as the Savior of the Pro-Wresting world, blew away Royler's ground technique (thought to be stronger than Ricson's) and brought the fight to a referee stop. After 48 years, Japanese combative sports could claim victory over the Gracie family. Not only pro-wrestling fans but all combative sports fans were wildly excited over this victory.

Vovchanchyn, the Ultimate Weapon from the North, causes Kerr to black out — but ultimately it's to no avail.
Kerr and Vovchanchyn clash to struggle for the top seat as foreign fighters. Vovchanchyn put a knee kick to Kerr, causing him to black out, and was declared winner by TKO. However, the decision was later changed to "no contest" because of his illegal action. Nevertheless there is no denying the power of the Ultimate Weapon from the North. Sakuraba came on with pro-wrestling techniques as he had promised, and gained cheers from the audience. He achieved a stylish win through the use of an arm bar, taking him beyond the realm of ValeTudo. Allan Goes, who was so eager to fight Sakuraba again, appeared at the venue. Antonio Inoki joined in the celebration at the event as well.

Takada challenges undefeated Kerr, suffers defeat! Ogawa's first PRIDE victory!
First participants this time were Naoya Ogawa, UFO, Mezger, the sixth King of Pancrase, Carl Malenco, Battlarts. Frank Shamrock, former UFC middle class champ, showed his intention to participate as well. Ogawa dodged blows from Goodridge and took home a sweeping victory, gaining huge cheers from fans. Sakuraba fought Braga, who had brought Funaki completely down, and snatched victory by making him tap out from an arm bar. Braga has never tapped out before. Kerr, the undefeated fighter whom nobody wants to face, fought Takada. Takada endured bravely but was utterly outfought. Kerr's extraordinary power was in full force.

Takada floors former UFC King, and Ogawa finally shows up!
Enson Inoue’s first appearance and fight with Mark Kerr was cancelled due to Kerr’s injury. Enson took an easy advantage over Nishida, a substitute, and won after only 24 seconds of the 1st Round. Unfortunately he broke his right fist. Sakuraba got a quick win over Victor and bellowed "I want to fight a stronger guy!", which brought huge cheers from fans. Takada came from behind to win by a heel hold over Coleman, who became a second consecutive winner in the UFC, and had bounced back after a hard-won defeat over Ricson. After the match, Naoya Ogawa stormed into the ring to call for a fight with Takada. He replied "I will accept any challenge from anybody anytime!", leaving a strong impression on the gathering.

Takada falls to Ricson once again by an arm bar!
This was the re-match between Ricson and Takada, one year later. Takada vowed revenge on Ricson and fought well, but again lost by an arm bar, just as he had last year. But Alexsander Otsuka, who first appeared with Battlarts, stole the show. Alex went up against Ruas, and his repeated blows on the ground led his counterpart to a dead end. The audience erupted over his victory. Shoji won over Ismail, a Brazilian "Mad Dog", Vovchanchyn slammed Goodridge heavily, and Kerr achieved an overwhelming victory over Hugo Duarte, strongest of the Luta Livre, who had had a street fight with Ricson.

The resurrection of Takada, a splendid comeback after a bitter defeat!
Six months have passed since his defeat over Ricson. He won over Sturgeon by a heel hold in his comeback. After this bout, he declared a revenge battle against Ricson and the fans cheered. Sakuraba vs. Newton, a Japan vs. Canada summit in the middleweight class, was a scrambling mix-up and Sakuraba won by one. It was called the best bout in PRIDE history. Kerr and Goodridge dominated the bouts completely to reveal their real power. Matsui vs. Shoji was the first Japanese contenders match. Matsui, professional wrestler, showed his guts, and ended the match in a draw after a 40-minute, all-out crush.

UFO King vs. K-1 King, this unprecedented match ended in an unexpected result...
In this event, Kerr, the strongest in the primaries, faced Cikatic, K-1 King, to fight a dream match. But under pressure from Kerr, Cikatic held the rope and lost by illegal actions. We had no chance to see Kerr's real strength though we caught a glimpse of his breathtaking speed and power. Royler, Ricson's actual brother, faced Sano, professional wrestler, and won overwhelmingly, despite a difference in body weight of over 30kg. Renzo won over Kikuta in a 50-minute crush. Gracie's power was unshakable. As UFC King Ruas, a veteran of Luta Livre, first appeared, he was in trouble from Goodridge's hard blows, but endured to a reversal victory. He proved to be the King on the Road. Sakuraba made his debut at "PRIDE", and got an easy win over White, former Pancrase fighter.

Ricson wins sweeping victory over Takada in the first round of legacy!
The "Bout of the Century" featuring Ricson vs. Takada has finally come true. Ricson, known as a"400 consecutive winner" and Takada called "the strongest" fought a decisive battle to rock Japanese combative sports. Ricson dominated the fight completely, and Takada had to tap in mortification from an arm bar, echoing the screams of fans in the Dome.
Kurosawa from then Kyokushin-Kaikan, Shoji and Murakami from Wa-Jyutsu/Keishu-Kai(current UFO), Kitao from Buko-Dojo participated, regardless of the frame of the groups. Kurosawa succumbed to a doctor stop due to ligament rupture, but his attitude to go on was what we praised as "Kyokushin Spirit". Shoji, faced with Renzo, same group as Ricson, fought to a tie ending, against all expectation. It was also an upset match of historical proportion. Murakami and Kitao won overwhelmingly.
